Gospel of the day: Mark 4:26-34

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Illustration of the Growing Seed

Jesus also said, "Here is another illustration of what the Kingdom of God is like: A farmer planted seeds in a field, and then he went on with his other activities. As the days went by, the seeds sprouted and grew without the farmer's help, because the earth produces crops on its own. First, a leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat are formed, and finally, the grain ripens. And as soon as the grain is ready, the farmer comes and harvests it with a sickle."

Illustration of the Mustard Seed

Jesus asked, "How can I describe the Kingdom of God? What story should I use to illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed. Though this is one of the smallest of seeds, it grows to become one of the largest of plants, with long branches where birds can come and find shelter." He used many such stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they were able to understand. In fact, in his public teaching, he taught only with parables, but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained the meaning to them.

Reflection

In today's gospel, Jesus describes the Kingdom of God in a unique way. In the first parable, he explains that the Kingdom of God is like a man who scattered seeds in the fields and does other activities. The seeds grow without the help of the farmer because it is natural for them. When the crop is fully grown, it is the time that the farmer harvests the crop. In the second parable, Jesus illustrates the Kingdom of God as a mustard seed that is planted. It is the smallest seeds, yet when it becomes fully grown, it is one of the largest plants on earth.

Let's reflect and ask ourselves. Do we see ourselves as one of God's mustard seeds whom He created to grow? If God created the mustard seed to provide food and shelter for the birds, we are also created to share our gifts with our neighbors. So what are the fruits that you are bearing? What are the gifts that you share with others?

The gospel reminds us to see the beauty in little things. The Kingdom of God exists in the smallest things. We may not notice them first but as soon as time passes by, it becomes the best thing in our life.  We cannot easily determine the His plans for us but we believe that it was the best for us. We may encounter different challenges in life but we should always believe that this will help us to grow. Also, be mindful of the actions we do in other people. Who knows? Maybe one of them is a mustard seed that grows more than you could imagine. Let us appreciate all the things we have on earth. Strive harder to develop the fruits within us and share this with others to have a fruitful life!
