Gospel of the day: Mark 4:21-25
(January 28, 2021)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

Illustration of the Lamp

Then Jesus asked them, "Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed to shut out the light? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. "Everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to light. Anyone willing to hear should listen and understand! And be sure to pay attention to what you hear. The more you do this, the more you will understand and even more, besides. To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them."

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection:

The gospel today teaches us that we all have a light within us that is a gift of God. This light symbolizes that we are unique and different from one another and it is our responsibility to make this light shine for others to see. The darkness under a basket or under the bed symbolizes the challenges and difficulties we encounter in life. The light should inspire others to find their own light and we can do this by sharing the word of God. The light we have should not be put under a basket or under a bed to shut out it down, instead, we should use this darkness to shine brightly. We should embrace our failures and use this to inspire others. Moreover, the gospel teaches us that we should be a good listener if we want us to be heard. We should lend an ear to those who speak for us to understand them. Apply all the teachings of Jesus Christ in our life and use this lesson to serve our neighbors. May your light shine out of darkness for others to see so that it can be the source of light for those who cannot shine on their own.
