Gospel of the day: Matthew 9:14-15 (February 19, 2021)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
The disciples of John came to Jesus, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Reflection
The gospel today is all about fasting. The disciples of John doubt Jesus' disciples because they were not fasting as they did. But Jesus replied that when the bridegroom is there, it is inappropriate to mourn and fast. The gospel tells us that Jesus is the bridegroom and as long as he was present, it is the time for celebration. Fasting is a sign of mourning and it would be inappropriate action if we mourn in the time of celebration. The message is that there is the time for fasting, but when Jesus' presence came, we should rejoice and celebrate. Jesus will come back at the right time, and when that time comes, we should rejoice and be grateful! Have faith in God!
