A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew
Teaching about the Law
"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them. I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God's law will remain until its purpose is achieved. So if you break the smallest commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God's laws and teaches them will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Reflection
The gospel today emphasizes the importance of God's law. In the book of Matthew, Jesus makes it clear that the Old Testament still stands. He did not come to change what was written before, rather he came to challenge us not only to follow the Lord's commandments but also to lead others to follow them as well. The commandments are there for us to be loving, respectful, just, merciful, caring for God’s creation. It produces the fruits of righteousness, holiness, peace, and joy as we live to the truth the Law of God provides. Let us not be confused about the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of Moses because both of them teach us to be good children of God. Their teachings help us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us ask ourselves: Am I following God's commandments? Today let us be reminded that Jesus leads us to God our Father because he is the way, the truth, and the life. He brings peace and hopes to every humankind. He leads us to enter in the Kingdom of God, so follow and obey the Lord's commandment!
